The church of Verdun has been listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments since 1910\. It is one of the jewels of Romanesque art in Ariège.
Its mountainous character offers a striking contrast with the village that is nicknamed the little Nice...
The Romanesque church of Verdun, one of the innumerable churches or chapels that illuminate the valley by the diversity of their forms, sits on its heights, near the Moulines stream. Here we find the model on which was built the Saint-Sernin cathedral of Toulouse. Strongly marked by the mountainous character of the population faithful to its pagan cults, Catalan or Toulousan influences, the Ariège Romanesque art will satisfy the amateur in search of detail, forms, styles, simplicity. It is difficult not to be sensitive to its local limestone walls, its rounded base and its roofs layered under wood frames covered with slate. Built by the monks of Cluny who came to settle in Ariège in the 11th and 12th centuries, then possession of the canon
