À propos du lieu

Château des archevêques de Narbonne

9 Place Gabriel Peri, 34310 Capestang, France

Hérault

Occitanie

The castle was built by the archbishops of Narbonne, lords of the place. It would be due to Pierre de la Jugie, archbishop of Narbonne from 1347 to 1375\. From the 14th and 15th century, the archbishops of Narbonne endeavoured to own a castle worthy of their rank. In the middle of the 15th century, a commission for the ceiling painted to a scholarly complexity is requested by Archbishop Jean d'Harcourt: 150 closoirs on themes of an astonishing diversity (religious or profane scenes, entertainment or gallant scenes, courtiers or common people, fantastic bestiary or real animals). Each of these closoirs tells a scene of life from the Middle Ages and an interpretation center highlights the History of the Archbishops of Narbonne and Capestang.
