Since its creation in 1976, the Petit Palais Museum has presented a very famous series of four cassoni, wedding chests, which tell with force details the history of Theseus and the Minotaur. Recently rediscovered a 5th and 6th panel (deposited by the Louvre Museum for one and loaned by a private collector for the other) complete this set in an exceptional way. The exhibition presents the material history of this recomposed work but also a new reading of its meaning convoking history and literature.

Housed in the former palace of the archbishops whose construction begins at the beginning of the fourteenth century. during the installation of the papacy in Avignon, the museum of the Petit Palais enjoys a prestigious location on the square of the Palace of the Popes, at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Opened since 1976, the museum presents collections from two distinct origins: the collection of Italian paintings collected by the Marquis Campana in the first half of the 19th century, constituting an exceptional repository of the Louvre Museum, and a set of Provençal paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages deposited by the Calvet Foundation.
