Cloître saint-trophime
Cour de l’archevêché, 13200 Arles
- Bouches-du-Rhône
- Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
Arles offers an interesting example of the adaptation of an ancient city to the civilization of medieval Europe. It preserves impressive Roman monuments as well as exceptional antique collections. Inside the walls, Saint-Trophime with its cloister is one of the major monuments of Provençal Romanesque art. The cloister of Saint-Trophime adjoins the church. The first two Romanesque galleries date from the 12th century, to which two other Gothic-style galleries were added in the 14th century. The sculptures, of exceptional quality, have been the subject of an ambitious restoration that has just been completed.
