Cryptoportiques d'Arles

Arles offers an interesting example of the adaptation of an ancient city to the civilization of medieval Europe. It preserves impressive Roman monuments as well as exceptional antique collections. Inside the walls, Saint-Trophime with its cloister is one of the major monuments of Provençal Romanesque art. Like all Roman cities, Arelate had a vast forum that has since disappeared. But to be able to build it on a flat surface, the Romans used, a century BC, a vast system of vaulted galleries. One can today circulate in this unusual place.
