The French Revolution founded the public archives and set out the principle of citizens' free access to documents. From the outset, citizens have been at the heart of the archives' mission. This is still true 230 years later, in a society where access to law, knowledge and culture is a central value and is aligned with the principles of administrative transparency and democratic accountability.
