Château de la Berthière
La Berthière, 49124 Plessis-Grammoire
- Maine-et-Loire
- Pays de la Loire
La Bertière was, before the Revolution, the seat of a seigneury whose lands were divided between the parishes of Plessis, Pellouailles and Villevêque. The castle, of which only one wing remains, dates back to the thirteenth century. The surviving constructions are more recent, probably 16th-17th centuries.
It was a strong house surrounded by moats, today partly filled. This enormous building had about forty windows, and it was accessed by two bridges: to the east a stone bridge that still exists, to the west a drawbridge. On the parochial level, the seigneurs of La Bertière were attached to Plessis. But they had their own chapel, outside the moat, (landmark 329 of the cadastral plan), located in the parish of Villevêque.
