On the site of the medieval abbey of Saint-Serge are read three essential architectural eras: the 12th century of the abbey, the Mauritian reconstruction of conventual buildings (with 2 cloister wings), a 3rd cloister wing designed in the 19th century by architect Joly Leterme. It is in this last period that the chapel of the major seminary (major seminary which then occupies the whole of the former abbey) belongs. Joly Leterme takes up, for this last campaign, the Mauritian perspectives of the 18th-19th century; the monumental plan of the new chapel is thought in remarkable harmony with the new cloister wing: the interior volumes are those of"an immense cathedral choir in which the services are done with more pomp than in any other church".
