Couvent des Récollets
1 place des Récollets, 64500 Ciboure
- Pyrénées-Atlantiques
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Following the witchcraft trials and to pacify the relations between the inhabitants of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure, a convent was built in 1611 by the Franciscan monks of the Recollet branch, on a small island in the middle of the Nivelle. The chapel was consecrated in 1613 then the cloister completed in 1643\. In the centre of the cloister, a cistern was built in 1662 thanks to the generosity of Cardinal Mazarin, on the occasion of the wedding of Louis XIV. In 1791, the Recollet brothers were expelled. Then, from 1821, the convent housed the Customs Service within its cloister. The part of the chapel will host activities related to fishing as early as 1900\. Chosen to house the future Centre d'interprétation de l'architecture et du patrimoine du Pays d'art et d'histoire de Saint-Jean-de-Luz Ciboure, this former convent is undergoing an important restoration.
