Built in the fourteenth century on the ruins of an older castle, the monument underwent several reshufflings and numerous improvements until the nineteenth century. The castle has retained its medieval fortress appearance which is reflected in the water of the wide moat that surrounds it.
Charles Louis de Secondat, better known as Montesquieu, was very attached to the family castle of La Brède. The estate remained the property of the Montesquieu family for nearly 900 years until the death of the Countess of Chabannes in 2004.
