Guided tour of the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady of Bernières-sur-Mer
The church of Bernières is dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady. Its construction, made of Creully stone, began 900 years ago in the Romanesque style and has evolved over a century with the growing needs of a prosperous village following architectural trends and advances. This evolution from the Romanesque style with thick load-bearing walls to the Gothic style with large windows allowing light to penetrate, makes the building a model of this transition. It is also remarkable for its octagonal spire, 67 metres high, and its baroque altarpiece, which earned it the MH «Historic Monument» designation in 1840. The ascent to the triforium is exceptionally authorised at the European Heritage Days
In agreement with this medieval space a demonstration of the work of illumination will be proposed during the commented visit. Documents will be provided to visitors.
