Guided tour of the stormwater storage basin of Issy-les-Moulineaux
On the occasion of the European Heritage Day which will take place on 17 September 2022, come and discover the rainwater storage basin of Issy-les-Moulineaux!
This 25 m deep underground installation helps to preserve the quality of the Seine by avoiding spills in it. It also aims to avoid overloading sewerage systems in rainy weather but also overflows on the road. This building has a storage capacity of 23 400 m³ of water or a little more than 9 Olympic swimming pools!
Concretely, how does it work?
When a thunderstorm or heavy rain occurs, excess water flows into the basin. When the rain stops, the water stored in the basin is taken back by draining pumps to be gradually transported to the sewerage system before being sent for treatment on a sewage treatment plant.
The basin has a cleaning system from bins (called troughs) filled with rainwater. These troughs are tipped one after the other, causing the sludge to be flushed back into a tarp and evacuated into the sewerage system by sludge pumps. After cleaning, the pool is ready to receive another rain!
