Discovered in May 1950, during the drilling of a sewage disposal well, this collective tomb dating from about 2,500 B.C. is now kept inside the cultural centre. Excavations conducted from 1950 to 1952 helped to clear the central part of the burial, leaving intact its two extremities and all human bones. The tomb is in the form of a pit on the paved floor and on the walls of small vertical slabs. It is sealed by two levels of larger slabs. The burial contains about forty bodies including about 24 adults, two or three old people and a dozen children. The funerary furniture consists of stone tools and weapons, adornment elements and ceramic vase fragments. It was during this period, which preceded the Bronze Age, that numerous collective burials developed in the Yvelines (dolmens, covered aisles, sepulchral aisles, etc.). The Neolithic men were buried with their precious tools and objects. The study of these objects shows that it was a small agricultural population.
The collar or headband made of fox and wild cat teeth was found near a child. It is composed of 19 adornment elements including 8 perforated teeth and 11 fitted shells. The teeth, perforated at the root, are all canines of wild animals: fox, wild cat and perhaps wolf. While it is relatively common to discover isolated adornment elements in collective burials, it is exceptional to find several of them gathered together. In this case, the place of the beads and pendants, around the child’s skull, makes it possible to identify a necklace or a band that could be worn around the head. In addition, the exclusively wild origin of animals gives this object a specific symbolic value that is difficult for us to interpret, but which allows us to grant a special social status to the child in question, who is alone to be buried with such a jewel.
