The collection of the Cognacq-Jay Museum was collected between 1900 and 1925 by businessman Ernest Cognacq and his wife Marie-Louise Jay. Founder of the Samaritan department stores, Cognacq devoted part of his fortune to the acquisition of works of art. He donated this collection to the City of Paris in 1928\. The museum presents a set of paintings, sculptures, furniture and art objects of the eighteenth century (Chardin, Fragonard, Greuze, Lemoyne, Oeben, Saly...). Formerly presented boulevard des Capucines, the collection was transferred in 1990 to a mansion in the Marais built at the end of the sixteenth century for Médéric de Donon, general controller of the royal buildings.
