The initial program of Gehry housed, on 17,000 m 2, a great diversity of functions since the American Center acts as an American cultural embassy in Paris. It must also be a place for reception and training by offering 26 accommodations, a restaurant, a cafeteria, a bookstore, a tourism and information agency, a language school, a 400-seat auditorium spread over three levels, as well as a 100-seat cinema, computer and audiovisual equipment, workshops, rehearsal rooms, educational spaces, exhibition rooms and offices for the administration of the American Center association. The cultural part occupied more than half of the surfaces. The sponsors hoped for an extraordinary object that would stand out in its urban environment and reflect the spirit of its time and program. Frank O. Gehry produces an interlocking of various volumes that resembles an architectural game of chance.
