Memory trail: From stone to pen, the places of memory of the Vel d'Hiv roundup
On 16 and 17 July 1942, at the initiative of the Germans, the French police arrested 12,884 Jews in Paris. This unprecedented round-up involves, for the first time, more than 4,000 children under the age of 16. They are taken to the «Vel d'Hiv», the famous sports palace located not far from the Eiffel Tower, and remain there for several days in inhuman conditions. Deported from Drancy to Auschwitz-Birkenau, few survived. What remains today of «these days of tears and shame», in the words of Jacques Chirac in 1995?
Hosted by Sophie Gagnard, historian and coordinator of memory routes in the pedagogical service.
This visit to the 15th district continues at the Shoah Memorial with the exhibition dedicated to the drawings of the round-up by Cabu. Transportation by metro.
Rendezvous at 3pm in front of the monument, Square of the Jewish Martyrs Square of the Winter Velodrome.
