The mission of the CNAEF is to collect, classify, preserve, communicate and enhance the archives of the services and bodies of the French Bishops' Conference (CEF), a collegial body of bishops in France, created in 1964\. It also welcomes, preserves and values donations and archives relating to the history of the Catholic Church in France from various sources: religious institutes, lay movements, private persons, etc. Because of French ecclesial history (Revolution of 1789 and nationalisation of the property of the clergy, concordatary regime until 1905, creation of the Episcopal Conference in 1964, etc.), almost all the documents kept at the CNAEF date from the twentieth century, and are mostly after the Second Vatican Council. In the summer of 2019, nearly 6 linear kilometres of documents are preserved.
