Built in the mid-18th century, the House of Saint-Just was acquired by the parents of the French revolutionary Saint-Just (1767-1794) in 1776. Saint-Just lived there from the age of nine until his election to the Convention at the age of twenty-five. It was in this house that he wrote his first works and led his first political struggles in the service of his fellow citizens.
With its headband running under the roof and its gable "jumping sparrows", this stone house classified as Historical Monuments is typical of the rural architecture of Soissonnais. It contains a permanent exhibition dedicated to the historical figure of Saint-Just and his political and literary work.
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Association for the Safeguarding of the House of Saint-Just will offer on Saturday 17 September guided tours that will retrace the history of the building and present the documents on Saint-Just, his youth in the Aisne and his role in the French Revolution are exhibited there.
The House of Saint-Just is open all year round to visitors upon prior request to the tourist office of Blérancourt (03 23 39 72 17 or blerancourt.tourisme@orange.fr).
