The craters date from the 4th century. They are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Originally, they were dug to extract blocks of chalk, before becoming the basement of Saint-Nicaise Abbey. They were then complemented by a network of galleries linking cellars, crypts and cellars to house the Champagne wines which the Benedictines traded.
Destroyed during the French Revolution, the abbey survives only its basement, whose vaults, intact, welcome each year more than 70,000 visitors amazed by the remains of one of the most beautiful expressions of the Champagne Gothic style.
