The abbey church of Saint-Trophime d'Eschau is the only surviving building of an architectural complex that constituted the abbey of Saint-Sophie founded by a community of Benedictine nuns in 770\. The current church, built in 996 and remarkably preserved, is the oldest Romanesque church in Alsace. It bears witness, by its architecture, to the Ottonian renaissance of Carolingian inspiration. The memory of the Benedictine nuns who occupied the place for more than seven centuries was revived by the creation of a «monastic garden» in the enclosure of the presbytery, in front of the church.
