The Green Belt Bike Route

A bike ride to discover the Green Belt around Strasbourg and the many green spaces that make it up.

Stéphane Spach - Ville et Eurométropole de Strasbourg

The Green Belt comes from the city’s old defense systems. It corresponds to the grip of the old glacis that extend beyond the last fortifications by encircling the city center and by skirting the railway track south of the Neudorf, at the articulation between the central districts and their periphery. For his centennial, photographer Stéphane Spach explored and documented the Green Belt’s natural spaces, buildings and road networks. The exhibition retraces this collection work, as a walk to discover surprising landscapes.

Intended to reinforce the defensive system of Strasbourg, this lock of fortification is built by the engineer Tarade between 1686 and 1700 according to the plans of Vauban, commissioner general of the fortifications of Louis XIV. Harrows lowered under the arches allowed to flood the southern front of the city to make it inaccessible to the assailants; they also prevented access to the city by water. This strategic manoeuvre was used in 1870 to try to counter the siege of the imperial armies. The dam, redesigned several times, is now used by pedestrians to cross the river. Its panoramic terrace furnished in 1965 offers a beautiful view of the district of Petite France.
