The church of Saint-Arbogast in Herrlisheim was built between 1965 (laying of the first stone) and 1970 (date of its consecration). It is built on the site of an old church dating from the eighteenth century, partially classified as Historical Monuments in 1932 and severely damaged during the Second World War. Starting in 1945, the question of rebuilding the ruined building was the subject of four consecutive projects. The selected project will be a complete break with traditional religious architecture. It is based on a triangular plan. The main materials used are concrete, wood and pebbles from the nearby Rhine. The walls of the nave give a very wide place to bay windows. As for the bell tower, it is distinct from the main building and its height makes it a constitutive element and identifier of the panorama of the commune.
The church of Saint-Arbogast is emblematic of the communal heritage recognized by the label «Architecture Contemporaine Remarquable» of the Ministry of Culture.
