Through documents dating back to the Middle Ages, the exhibition «Abbayes en Meuse» evokes the existence of the twenty-three abbeys that were in the department of the Meuse.
The exhibition also looks at the daily lives of the men and women who lived in these places, once dedicated to prayer, meditation and hospitality.
A land of borders and exchanges, Lorraine has seen many monastic and religious communities flourish since the seventh century, especially in the forests and valleys that abound in the spaces corresponding to the current department of the Meuse.
Christian monasteries of nuns, monks or canons regular placed under the direction of an abbess or abbot, the abbeys existed for several centuries, before disappearing for the most part at the time of the French Revolution, and left a lasting mark on history, the culture, heritage and landscapes of our territory.
