Discover the «Vî fournia», a blast furnace capital for the understanding of the Ardennes.

From the parking lot of Linchamps, facing the church, to the old furnace, a walk accompanied and commented by M. Maxence Pieters, archaeologist, and members of the Pays des Hautes-Rivières.
On site, Mr. Pieters will explain the importance of the survey excavations carried out in 2021 and the richness of the place for the understanding of the development of metallurgy in our department.
It takes about 30 minutes to walk.

In Linchamps, the ruins of a blast furnace, "Vî fournia", in patois, on the right bank of Ours Creek, 100 m upstream of "La Creux roche", the traces of a rod and multiple slags are evidence of metallurgical activity dating back to at least the sixteenth century. In fact, as early as 1573, one finds traces of a certain Jehan David, master of forge at Linchamps. In 1579, this same Jehan David signed a lease with the Duke of Guise, owner of the castle of Château-Regnault, authorizing him to «take and use 5000 ropes of wood per year for the use of the forges furnace and instrument to cut the make».
The excavations carried out in 2021 by Mr. Maxence Pieters and his team revealed remains of structures and materials important for a future understanding of the site, but also as testimonies of the age of metallurgy in our territory.
