It was in the 15th century that the Plessis family settled in Richelieu. Born in 1585, Armand Jean du Plessis, future Cardinal of Richelieu, spent his entire childhood there. It was from 1625 that the Cardinal, then principal minister of Louis XIII, asked Jacques Lemercier, Architect of the King, to build, on the site of the former family residence, a vast castle, foreshadowing Versailles. Confiscated as national property from the revolution, the badly damaged estate was bought back in 1805 by a merchant of goods who sold it stone by stone. The works of art are scattered and incorporate public or private collections. Today, only the Dome (horse riding school), the Orangerie, the Caves, the main entrance and the entire canal layout remain.
