Villa Scoliva

The archaeological site was discovered by chance in 1955, when a walnut tree was removed. Merovingian burials were then discovered. Escolives has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Although remains of this period and protohistory have been discovered, it is the Gallo-Roman period that is best known on the commune. An occupation began at the beginning of the 1st and until the end of the 6th century AD. You can see the residential part of a very large villa. The thermal baths of this complex are particularly well preserved, as is the capture of the source that supplied the complex with water.

The archaeological site was discovered accidentally(by chance) in 1955, by tearing away(by extracting) a walnut. Merovingian burials were then brought to light. Escolives was inhabited since the Neolithic. Although vestiges of this period and Protohistory are discovered, it is the Gallo-Roman period which is the best known on the municipality. An activity(occupation) begins from the beginning of Ier and till the end of the VIth century of our era. You will be able to see the residential part(party) of a very big(great) villa. The thermal baths of this set(group) are particularly well kept(preserved), as well as the catchment of the source(spring) which fed the set(group) with water. In the part(party) of exhibition(exposure), you will be able to see objects of the everyday life and especially very important set(group) of sculptures of the IIth century, remployées in foundation of the thermal baths of the IVth century. These sculptures result(come) from a sanctuary the location of origin of which (Auxerre or Escolives is not unfortunately known?) .
