A menhir on the climb of Brancion, a menhir halfway down Uxelles, the Roman way Mâcon-Autun in the forest, a source that has never dried up, Chapaize was always a place of life and spirituality. Gallo-Roman coins, a well of the 5th century, skeletons of the 8th century, a sacred fountain (remnant of the Saint-Léger chapel 9th century) where, until the Revolution, pilgrimages took place, testify to the past. At the beginning of the 11th century, Hugues de Chalon called upon Guillaume de Volpiano to reorganize the monasteries of the city. It is most likely this great monk builder who built Saint-Martin de Chapaize (cf. the monograph by Mme Rusel). This monument is characterized by a simple and flat facade with a central body barely in relief, 3 naves without transept – what is called a basilical plan.
