In the second half of the 18th century, Besançon experienced a period of economic stability conducive to urban development. In 1764 Charles-André de Lacoré, the new intendant of Franche-Comté, settled at Besançon. Eager to bring the necessary embellishments to a capital, he called for the construction of the theatre to a renowned Parisian architect, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, already present in Franche-Comté for the construction of the Saline Royale de la forêt de Chaux. The construction of the theatre began in the spring of 1778 under the direction of architect Bertrand, the work will be completed in 1784\. Claude Nicolas Ledoux will be able with this bisontine commission to concretize his conception of the theatre. Inspired by the Italian architect Palladio (1508-1580) for the treatment of its facade and the exterior architecture of the building, Ledoux innovates for the interior layout.
