The former Curial Barracks was rescued from demolition and rehabilitated in 1986 to accommodate a wide range of contemporary facilities with a cultural focus, as well as restaurants and nightclubs. The importance of this former barracks clearly shows the role of garrison town that Napoleon I intended to develop in 1804, because Chambéry was an obligatory point of passage for troops going to Italy or returning. In 1810, when the main building was completed, the future barracks had already cost more than one million francs, or five times more than the new installations at the castle to install the prefecture of the Mont-Blanc department!
