For more than 100 years, the former library-museum housed the Grenoble Municipal Library and Fine Arts Museum. The building was built in 1870 by the Parisian architect Charles-Auguste Questel to house these two functions and to contribute to the desired monumentality for the Place d'Armes (now Place de Verdun), which was then being created. The interior has a very particular distribution as well as a large decorative program.
