Sauxillanges, in the Puy de Dôme is a small village of 1300 inhabitants nestled in a green setting, on the banks of the Eau-Mère stream.
Its abbey, founded at the dawn of the 10th century, depends on the Benedictine abbey of Cluny. Very quickly, it welcomed more than eighty monks and became one of the five great priories of Cluny.
After 1789, it will be partially destroyed and the church’s property sold to private individuals
Today, several buildings remain, but the chapel Notre-Dame-du-Bois, renamed Maison du Patrimoine is the only one open to the public.
In addition to the magnificent building, a vessel formed by four bays extended by a pentagonal apse, the visitor could admire the vault, supported by crusades of warheads and its five keys of hanging vaults of the fifteenth century which are among the most beautiful of Auvergne.
He will also be able to admire various exhibitions set up on different levels of the chapel, then to rest or meditate in the garden of the Prior, located near the former dormitory of the monks.
Then one of the many randonettes going through the different districts of Sauxillanges, will allow him to discover the rich vernacular heritage of this pretty village.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Wood is attached to the many buildings of a complex architectural ensemble corresponding to the imposing Cluniac monastery of Sauxillanges founded in the 10th century and which continued to expand until the 15th. Dedicated to the sick, the Gothic chapel extended between the space reserved for the prior and the claustral space, a few meters southeast of the priory church. A cemetery ran along its northern flank, below the current Place de la Liberté. This arrangement allowed passage between the apartments of the prior located in the east and the chapter house in the west. The apse was flanked by a defensive tower described in the minutes of 1745, one of whose doors allowed access under the old roofs of the chapel. The elevation made in the nineteenth century removed the old framework, however we still keep a trace of the significant inclination of the roofs on the west gable of the chapel The church was built, leaning against the eastern wall of the building th
