Guided tour of the Farm of Villarivon

The discovery of the exterior and, inside the building, of the spaces formerly dedicated to agropastoral activity, will allow visitors to understand the progressive adaptation of the vernacular building of Upper Tarentaise, from the 17th to the 19th century, to the demands of the "revolution" Gruyère’s economy, while having sometimes allowed a few families enriched by the cheese and livestock trade, like the Jarre family in Villarivon, to record their socio-economic success in the context of this rural architecture.
On the heritage plan the visit of the Farm of Villarivon, registered MH since 2006 and dedicated emblematic site 2021 of the Heritage Mission for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, will also allow visitors to appreciate the formal and technical characteristics of this building designed to withstand the harsh mountain climate and the scourge of fire, The restoration work planned over a period of 3 to 4 years will actually start in 2023.

The visit to the farm of Villarivon, once devoted to agricultural activity, is of double historical and heritage interest. In its composite building of agropastoral vocation cleverly disguised as a mansion, the building illustrates in the first place the tremendous economic and social success of a family of "mountain entrepreneurs" from the 17th to the 19th century, in the institutional framework of the former States of Savoy suddenly dissolved, in 1860-1861, to the corrosive acid of the Risorgimento and the Italian Unity. In terms of heritage, however, and despite the final remodelling of its patrician-inspired exterior decoration in 1880, the farm still retains its hybrid building logic, both agro-pastoral and “residential”, all the characteristic functions of a «cow factory» inseparable, in the high valleys of the Northern Alps, from the boom of a flourishing Gruyère economy initiated at the beginning of Modern Times. To the attention of the visitors: the parking is extremely difficult in any season in Villarivon, visitors are urged to park their vehicle on the parking area and school buses located downstream of the hamlet on the Route de Bellentre, at the entrance sign to the locality, before reaching the interior of the village on foot.
