The Champollions became Vifois by a chain of circumstances. If Jacques-Joseph Champollion-Figeac, who had moved to Grenoble in 1798, had not had intellectual affinities with his neighbour Jacques Berriat-Saint-Prix, he probably would not have met Zoé Berriat, his sister. The marriage that followed enabled him to establish his home in the Berriat family home in the «Ombrages» of Vif. His younger brother Jean-François, a long-time librarian and teacher in Grenoble, made frequent visits there, especially during university holidays. Later, having become famous, he never missed an opportunity to rest in the green meadows of Vif.
