Crémieu is the capital of Isle-crémieu, a country in the heart of the Dauphiné, 40 km from Lyon. The territory of Isle-Crémieu has a wide variety of landscapes combining woods, ponds, rivers in the plains and high cliffs. The architecture of limestone and slate roofs (roofs in Isle-Crémieu) remains a striking feature of the landscape. Crémieu distinguished itself from the twelfth century with the installation of a priory of Benedictines at the top of the cliffs of Saint-Hippolyte and a castle on the hill Saint-Laurent. The city developed between the two hills. Dauphinoise since 1282 and bordering the Savoy, it plays an important military role and enjoys important commercial privileges.
