The abbey of Aulps is based(established) in Savoy at the end of the XIth century by monks of the abbey of Molesme. Their design is to create a monastery in compliance with their spiritual ideal: a kind of «laboratory of the monasticism», whose organisation is clearly érémitique. At the instigation of the first abbots, Aulps acquires a great renown. Experience(Experiment) led in the Alps influences even the writing(editorial staff) of the Charter of charity. Aulps includes cistercien order in 1136 into the filiation of Clairvaux. The monks abandon(give up) then their hermits' huts and do up the current domain. Guérin, the second abbot of raised(brought up) Aulps bishop of Zion(Sion) in 1138, dies in the odour of sanctity by 1150\. Buried in the abbey church, he becomes the main pastoral saint of the Alps. With a domain counting 40 000 hectares of lands, wood and high mountain pastures, Aulps is one of the most important monasteries of the medieval Savoy. In 1792, the monks hunted(chased away) by French leave the abbey. The magnificent abbey church is partly destroyed in 1823 by inhabitants of the village to rebuild their parish church burnt down. Today, the domain of rehabilitated Aulps receives(welcomes) in the old(former) monastic farm of modern and play exhibitions(exposures) devoted to the everyday life of the monks: «The visitors discover in Aulps a just balance between archaeology, architecture, history(story), local politics(policies), tourism and muséographie» (files(cases) of archaeology, on 2010). You should not miss the garden of the simple and medieval kitchen garden.
