Between the heart of the capital and the plateau of Mont d'Arbois, rises one of the only Sacred Mountains, those mountains of the Passion marked by chapels and scenes of the ascent to Calvary, that count our country. Built between 1840 and 1878, Le Calvaire de Megève is primarily the work of a man, Father Ambroise Martin (1791-1863), parish priest of Megève from 1820 until his death. It consists of fifteen chapels and oratories, staged on the first slopes of the mountain, depicting the stations of the Way of the Cross leading to Jerusalem’s Golgotha. The different buildings, which borrow from all the architectural styles of the past, house about fifty painted wooden statues, generally life-size, completed by frescoes and trompe-l'oeil. Architecture, sculpture and painting combine here to evoke in striking images of realism the life and passion of Christ. This beautiful ensemble was once a place of pilgrimage so important that it earned Megève the nickname of «Savoisian Jerusalem». Toda
