Begun in the 13th century, but completed nearly two hundred years later, the abbey church of Saint-Antoine is considered one of the most completed examples of Gothic architecture in south-eastern France. The main facade of the "Great Church" (as it was once called) has an unusual width and is of an intimidating majesty. When one enters the abbey church, attention is immediately drawn to the vastness of the interior space. Built on a basilical plan (with main nave, large collateral and no less than seventeen chapels), the church - both sanctuary of the Antonine liturgy and centre of pilgrimages in the Middle Ages - was designed to accommodate considerable crowds. The scale of the architectural program and the rich ornamentation of this building naturally compel admiration.
