Located on the borders of the Duchy of Lorraine and the County of Champagne, the Abbey of Saint-Marie de Mureau was founded around 1147 by some canons from the Abbey of Sepfontaines and depended on the order of Prémontrés. It regularly suffered numerous and ceaseless degradation, especially during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). In 1646, the abbey was restored (reconstruction of the cloister, houses, the church, etc.).
Radiant from its creation, the abbey, at the end of the sixteenth century, becomes one of the richest of the greater region, but also one of the most influential. It owns properties in about 100 localities (buildings on Rue Serpenoise in Metz, an iron mine in Chaligny, a salt mine in Marsal, vineyards in Toulois, etc.). The religious created and developed metallurgy in the valley of Mureau and Saônelle. It also housed a rich library of more than 4,600 volumes (now in the Neufchâteau library). In 1791, the abbey was sold and destroy
