The Sisters of Divine Providence installed their motherhouse in Saint-Jean-de-Basel in 1827, after having bought a former preceptory which had belonged to the Knights of the Order of Malta until the Revolution.
The Knights had themselves settled on the grounds of a monastery built in the 9th century by the Augustinians on the site of a chapel dedicated to the hermit Saint Bassollus.
Over the next two centuries, the congregation built several large buildings, a reception pavilion and a Gothic-style chapel around a central garden. A farm and a large wooded park adjoin the buildings of the convent.
Currently, about fifty Sisters reside in Saint-Jean-de-Basel, after a life spent in the service of the most fragile.
