In the urban environment of Talsi, in short distances, one from another, there are unique historical evidence discovered in archaeological studies - fire closet, Dzirnavkalns with the place of medieval castle, Curonian castle mound. It is believed that the place of making the artifacts found in Vilkmuiza Lake was Talsi castle mound, which was a significant center of crafts and administration. During the archaeological excavations at Talsi Hillfort and the ancient town, rich evidence of both iron and non-ferrous metal processing was obtained. Dzirnavkalns is considered to be a cult place of ancient Couronians, where Livonian order in the 13th century. built a stone castle. In the chronicle it was last mentioned in 1636\. It was concluded in the historical research that the Talsi castle mound was inhabited by the Livonians of Courland until the 11th century and only with the expansion of the Couronians in the Northern Kurzeme during the 11th century the castle mound gained the importance of the center and was very strongly fortified. The ancient city has also formed at the same time.
