The museum was created in 1872 from the very rich collection of works of art bequeathed by Louis-Alexandre Ducastel. It has since been enriched by donations from art lovers and Saint-Germanois artists. The museum has been awarded the «Musée de France» label since 2002\. Since 2021, it bears the name of Ducastel-Vera and is deployed on three sites: Espace Paul-et-André-Vera, Villa Eugénie-Désoyer (historical building of the museum that houses the Royal Apothecary) and the Maison natale Claude-Debussy.
