The current museum rises on the site of the former Jesuit garden. It consists of two buildings from the 18th century and the old bishopric built in the 19th century. The first construction was the hotel Jouin de la Tremblay, built between 1708 and 1718 according to plans by Claude Masse. This hotel will become the residence of the governors from 1748\. In 1775, the city had two wings built, one on the south side of the hotel; the other on the north side, reserved for the outbuildings and stables. This project, dated 1773, was due to Julien Nassivet. After the death of the governors, in 1808 Napoleon gave two wings to the city to set up a public library and the natural history cabinet that had been bequeathed to the city’s academy in 1782 by Clement de la Faille. In 1874, Bishop Thomas bought the hotel de la Tremblay to make it the bishopric. It will be completely remodeled from this date, then in 1914\. The south wing will then be built along the new section of rue Alcide d'Orbigny. Fr
