"Nacht" ist der Ausgangspunkt für das Werk von Edgar Hilsenrath (1926-2018), das sich an seiner eigenen Geschichte und dem ukrainischen Ghetto orientiert, in dem er zwischen 1941 und 1945 vier Jahre verbrachte. In einem mechanischen, prägnanten, halluzinierten und fast filmischen Stil erzählt der Roman die Geschichte von Ranek, der im Laufe der Tage versucht, im Ghetto von Prokov zu überleben. Die Charaktere werden auf Schatten reduziert. als hätten sie keine seele und keinen körper mehr. "Night" is the starting point of Edgar Hilsenrath's work (1926-2018), inspired by his own history and the Ukrainian ghetto where he spent four years between 1941 and 1945. In a mechanical, concise, hallucinated and almost cinematic style, the novel tells the story of Ranek who, over the days, tries to survive in the Prokov ghetto. The characters are reduced to shadows... as if they no longer had a soul or body. Yet, in this permanent fog, elements of life surge: Hunger, cold, scenes of hasty love or childbirth in the middle of the ghetto show that humanity remains. Censored in Germany for twenty years, Nuit is now considered the masterpiece of the German Jewish writer.

Dans un style mécanique, concis, halluciné et quasiment cinématographique, le roman raconte l’histoire de Ranek qui, au fil des jours, tente de survivre dans le ghetto de Prokov. Les personnages sont réduits à des ombres... comme s’ils n’avaient plus ni âme ni corps. Pourtant, dans ce brouillard permanent, surnagent des éléments de vie : la faim, le froid, les scènes d’amour hâtives ou d’accouchement au milieu du ghetto montrent que l’humanité demeure. Censuré en Allemagne pendant vingt ans, Nuit est aujourd’hui considéré comme le chef-d’œuvre de l’écrivain juif allemand.
