In 1575, Médéric de Donon acquires plots of land to immediately build his house. The new owner belongs to a family from Ile-de-France. Controller General of the King’s Buildings, he married Jeanne della Robbia, daughter of the sculptor Girolamo della Robbia. He lived in the hotel until his death, which remained in the Donon family until 1640\. The hotel then became the property of the Le Mairat family who kept it until 1798\. At that date, it is sold to Bourgois-Hénault de Tourneville. The heirs of the latter still own it in 1930\. Like many buildings in the Marais, during the 19th century and early 20th century, the Donon hotel was used for commercial purposes and disfigured by lean-to; Eugène Atget’s photographs bear witness to this state. The City of Paris acquired it in 1974 and restored it to present the collections of the Cognacq-Jay museum.
