The castle of Amboise testifies to the Gothic architecture and the Renaissance period, while its landscape environment is part of a more recent time of garden creation. The gardens, with an area of about two hectares, are completely enclosed by walls and ramparts that surround the site. Leonardo da Vinci is buried within the castle grounds. His bust welcomes the walker at the entrance of this landscaped area. Facing the eastern facade of the Renaissance wing, extends the north terrace which hosts the garden of Naples: a contemporary garden paying tribute to Dom Pacello da Mercogliano, author of the gardens of the villa Poggio Reale near Naples and invited to France by King Charles VIII (1470-1498). Parallel to this desire to pay tribute to the introduction of the ideas of the Italian Renaissance in France, the castle of Amboise also proposes more contemporary influences, like the garden of Orient. The latter is created by the Algerian visual artist Rachid Koraïchi, whose works are often imbued with a memorial dimension, and presenting here a tribute to the 25 members of the smala of Emir Abd-el-Kader who died during their stay in Amboise (1848-1852). Varieties from the Mediterranean rim – cypress and jasmine – border the steles, while a garland of rosemary crosses them towards Mecca. It is a garden of meditation and contemplation. Remain a landscaped garden and the Jardin du Midi in which the visitor can stroll while observing a superb panorama over the entire Loire valley, the forest of Amboise and the city.
