The basements of Chinon are full of underground passages and other cavities. The Vaslins caves, a network of galleries over 5 km long, are the most important and rich in history. Much has been dug in the basements of Chinon over the centuries to extract valuable building materials, including tuffeau or millarge stone. To such an extent that the local dialect invented the term 'piours' to designate these forced workers of the excavation! It even took a ban on digging at the very beginning of the 19th century to avoid the collapse of the rocky peak where the fortress stands! This activity has left traces and even legends, like this fantasized underground linking Chinon to La Roche-Clermault passing under the Vienne... On the other hand, the immense Vaslins cellars that stretch from the dry moat of the fortress to the area of the Saint-Étienne church are very real.
