By Sarah Benharrech , research professor at CY Cergy Paris University. Many women have practiced botany, but few are the traces they have left in the works of history. Who today knows Victorine de Chastenay, Aglaé Adanson, Clémence Lortet, or even Mme La Révellière-Lépeaux? For a long time their work, their very existence, has been erased but recent research has brought these practitioners of botany out of the shadows after certain criteria such as merit were criticized and the amateur/professional antagonism was revised. This communication will focus on the modalities of creation of a historical object, the recognition of a plurality of practices by women botanists at the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, then will expose the agnotological strategies implemented to erase their memory. Finally, we will address a case study, that of a recently rediscovered Breton botanist, Mrs. Dugage de Pommereul (1733-1782), student of Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, assistant to André Thouin, head gardener at the Jardin du Roi, and expert in grasses.
