Maison Henri IV

This house was built in 1540 by a rich Valerian shipowner, Guillaume Ladire. At that time, the Normans settled in Brazil and brought back new products. The sculpted facade evokes these distant journeys through so-called 'exotic' scenes– like a kneeling man praying to the sun, or a lumberjack cutting down the famous 'Pau Brasil' tree – saints of the Catholic religion, bestiary, etc... Henry II stopped at Saint-Valery-en-Caux in 1550 and was probably received in this house by the notables of the city to whom he granted the privilege of the franc salé. But it is to the memory of the passage in town of Henri IV in 1593 that oral tradition dedicated the most beautiful house of this Saint-Léger district.
