Discover the exhibition: "Francis Jammes at the time of the Maison Chrestia, 1897-1907"; Calligram-signatures workshop.
Immerse yourself in the world of Francis Jammes and the city of Orthez at the time when the poet lived at the Maison Chrestia, from 1897 to 1907.
This exhibition retraces the life and work of Francis Jammes during this period, through documents, portraits, photographs of the time, as well as testimonies on several of his illustrious friends from the literary, artistic and musical world that he welcomed at the Maison Chrestia. An evocation of the city of Orthez completes this tour.
It was in this house that he wrote several of his major works:

From the Angelus of dawn to the evening Angelus
The Mourning of the Primroses
The Hare’s Novel
Clearings in the Sky_

The Maison Chrestia, built in 1781, known as Francis Jammes’ House, is built in the purest Béarnais style, with the roof of picon tiles, and a genoise (frieze) surrounding the main body at the junction of the exterior wall and the roof.
You can also admire the courtyard delimited by the main house, the outbuildings and the barn. None of the elements of the construction communicate with each other except via an exterior gallery. Behind the house is a very pretty well, built from pebbles from the Gave (river). The house is listed as a Historic Monument. It is here that the great poet Francis Jammes (1868-1938) lived from 1897 to 1907 and where he composed several of his major works, "From the Angelus of Dawn to the Angelus of Evening" (1898), "Clara d'Ellébeuse" (1899), "The Mourning of the Primroses" (1901), "Almaïde d'Étremont" (1901), "The Romance of the Hare" (1903), "Pomme d'anis" (1904) , “Thoughts from the Gardens” (1906), “The Church Dressed in Leaves” (1906) and “Clearings in the Sky” (1906). He received many illustrious visitors there. The Minister of Culture and Communication has awarded the Maison Chrestia the “Maisons des Illustres” label and the
House, with the Francis Jammes Association of which it is the head office, is a member of the National Federation of Writers’ Houses and Literary Heritage as well as the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Network of this federation. The Maison
