The abbey dates from the Carolingian period (11th and 12th centuries). All that remains today are remains and an exceptional building called «the Romanesque treasure». This square dungeon-shaped structure served as a repository for the monastery’s archives and precious objects. The landscaped site also includes a long and beautiful building called «the large granaries», which served as a hotel for the abbey.
According to legend, the abbey of Nanteuil was founded by Charlemagne in 780 and dedicated to Saint Benedict. His first official mention was on 27 November 858\. Destroyed in the ninth century by the Normans, it was restored and monastic life was restored at the end of the tenth century by the Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Poitiers, with the help of the Count of Angoulême.
The abbey dedicated to Our Lady was built in 1046 thanks to the masters of the castle of Ruffec. The monastery then took the name of Saint-Benoît and Notre-Dame de Nanteuil. It enjoyed a radiance and prosperity unt
